Topic 1 — Work or studies

1What job do you do?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“I work in customer support for a mobile banking company in Dhaka. I've been there for about eighteen months now, mostly helping customers who've had problems with payments or forgotten their PIN.”

Notice: job, employer and length of time (present perfect: I've been there for…), then what the work involves.

2What are your main responsibilities?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Mainly answering calls and online chats, and sorting out customers' problems as quickly as I can. I also have to keep careful records of every case, so that if a problem comes back, a colleague can pick it up straight away.”

Notice: a purpose clause (so that… can…) and precise phrasal verbs (sort out, pick up).উদ্দেশ্য বোঝাতে so that… can… এবং নির্দিষ্ট phrasal verb।

3What do you like least about your job?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Probably the shift pattern. Every few weeks I have to work late evenings, and it's quite hard to switch off and sleep properly after a long session on the phones.”

Notice: a clear answer, then the reason, with the natural phrase switch off.

4Would you recommend your job to a friend?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“To the right kind of person, yes. If someone's patient and enjoys solving problems, it's a good way into the finance sector, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who finds it hard to stay calm with frustrated people.”

Notice: a conditional recommendation (To the right kind of person… If someone's…) with a contrast.

Topic 2 — Drawing and painting

5Did you enjoy drawing when you were a child?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“I loved it. I was always drawing on the backs of old calendars, mostly boats and village scenes, and my mother still has a box full of them somewhere.”

Notice: past continuous for a repeated habit (I was always drawing) and a detail that links past to present.

6Do you ever draw or paint now?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Hardly ever, sadly. Work takes up most of my time, so the most I do these days is doodle in the margins of my notebook during long meetings.”

7Would you like to have a painting in your home?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Yes, I'd love an original painting rather than a print. Something calm, like a landscape of the river at sunset, would be perfect in our living room.”

Notice: a preference with rather than and a specific example.rather than

Topic 3 — Being on time

8Are you usually on time?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“I try to be, but I'm not always successful. With Dhaka traffic, a twenty-minute journey can easily take an hour, so I've got into the habit of leaving much earlier than I need to.”

9Is being on time important in your culture?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“It depends on the situation. For job interviews or exams, people are very punctual, but for social events it's perfectly normal to turn up half an hour late, and arriving exactly on time can actually feel a bit awkward.”

Notice: contrasts formal and social situations; a gerund subject (arriving exactly on time can…).

10What do you do to make sure you are not late?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“I check the traffic on my phone before I leave and always give myself extra time. I also lay out everything I need the night before, so I'm not rushing around looking for my keys in the morning.”

Notice: two practical strategies, the second with a purpose clause (so I'm not rushing around…).

11Have you ever been very late for something important?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Yes, for my cousin's engagement ceremony. Our car broke down halfway there, and by the time we finally arrived, the rings had already been exchanged, so I'm still teased about it.”

Model long turn Band 8–9

295 words — about 2 minutes at a natural speaking pace. It covers all four points on the card in order and sounds spoken, not memorised.

What the toy was

“The toy I remember best from my childhood is a little tin boat — the kind people sometimes call a ‘pop-pop boat’. It was about the size of my hand, painted bright red and blue, and it had a tiny candle inside. When you lit the candle and put the boat in water, it heated a little metal tube, and the boat would chug along making this wonderful pop-pop-pop sound.

How you got it

My grandfather gave it to me when I was about seven. He'd bought it from a street seller near the bus stand in his town, and he handed it over one evening without any fuss, just as I was going to bed — which meant I hardly slept that night because I was so excited.

How you played with it

For about a year, that boat was my absolute favourite thing. There was a pond right behind my grandparents' house, and every afternoon my cousins and I would light the candle and race it from one side to the other, or build little harbours for it out of mud and sticks. When it rained, I'd even play with it in a bucket on the veranda, which drove my grandmother mad because I left puddles everywhere.

Why you remember it so well

I think I remember it so clearly for two reasons. First of all, it was the first toy that made me curious about how things work. I couldn't understand how a candle could make a boat move, and when my grandfather explained it — very simply — I was completely fascinated. In a way, that's probably where my interest in engineering began. But it's also tied up with memories of my grandfather himself. The boat broke a long time ago, but whenever I hear a similar sound, I'm instantly taken back to that pond and those long summer afternoons.”

What makes this Band 8–9: all four points, each developed with concrete detail; would and past perfect used accurately for childhood memories (the boat would chug along, He'd bought it); precise, natural vocabulary (chug along, without any fuss, drove my grandmother mad, tied up with); and a clearly signposted explanation (First of all… But it's also…). First of all… But it's also…

Band 7

“I want to describe a small toy boat that I had when I was a child. It was made of tin, and it was red and blue. It had a small candle inside it, and when you put it in the water and lit the candle, it moved forward and made a ‘pop-pop’ sound, so people call it a pop-pop boat.

My grandfather gave it to me when I was around seven years old. He bought it from a street seller in his town and gave it to me one night before I went to sleep. I was so excited that I couldn't sleep.

I played with it almost every day for about one year. My grandparents had a pond behind their house, and my cousins and I used to race the boat there. Sometimes we made small harbours with mud and sticks. On rainy days, I played with it in a bucket, and my grandmother was not happy because the floor became wet.

I remember this toy very well for two reasons. Firstly, it made me interested in how machines work, because I didn't understand how a candle could move a boat, and my grandfather explained it to me. Maybe that's why I like engineering now. Secondly, it reminds me of my grandfather. The boat is broken now, but when I hear a similar sound, I remember those days.”

Why Band 7: Fluency & Coherence: speaks at length with clear organisation (Firstly… Secondly…), though the signposting is a little mechanical. Lexical Resource: enough to describe the toy and the memories, but less vivid and idiomatic (not happy, became wet). Grammar: a range of past forms used mostly accurately, with fewer complex structures (no past perfect where it would help: He bought it → He'd bought it). Pronunciation: a Band 7 speaker is generally easy to understand, with occasional L1 features.
Band 6

“I will talk about a toy boat which I had in my childhood. It was small and made by tin, colour red and blue. Inside there was a candle. When we light the candle and put it in water, it go forward and make sound pop-pop.

My grandfather give me this boat when I was seven. He bought it from a man in the road near bus stand. He gave me in the night and I was so happy that I can't sleep.

I played with this boat many days. Behind my grandfather house there was a pond, and I and my cousins play there with the boat. We make race with it. When it rain, I play in a bucket and my grandmother get angry because water everywhere.

I remember this toy because it was very interesting for me. I didn't know how a candle can move the boat, so my grandfather explained me how it works. Maybe for this I like engineering now. Also it remind me my grandfather. Now the boat is broken but I still remember it.”

Why Band 6: Fluency & Coherence: willing to speak at length and covers every point, but ideas are joined mostly with and, and the explanation is short. Lexical Resource: adequate but simple, with some wrong expressions (made by tin, make race). Grammar: attempts some complex sentences (a toy boat which I had, I was so happy that I can't sleep), but with frequent tense errors (He give, I play, it rain) and wrong verb patterns (explained me, it remind me my grandfather), though the meaning is clear. Pronunciation: a Band 6 speaker is generally understood, though some words may be unclear.
Band 5

“I will talk about my toy. It is a boat. Small boat, red and blue colour. It have a candle inside.

My grandfather give me this boat. I was seven. He buy from the road. I was very happy.

I play with the boat in the pond. My cousins also play. We make race. When rain, I play in bucket. My grandmother is angry, water everywhere.

I remember because it is interesting. The candle make the boat go, I don't know how. My grandfather tell me. Now I like engineering. Also I remember my grandfather. The boat is broken now. I am sad. But when I hear same sound, I remember the pond. I like this toy very much. It is my favourite toy. That's all.”

Why Band 5: Fluency & Coherence: keeps going, but far too short for two minutes, with short sentences joined only by and, also, but and little development. Lexical Resource: enough for a familiar topic, but relies on basic words and repetition (I like this toy very much. It is my favourite toy.). Grammar: some basic sentences are correct (It is a boat, I was seven, I was very happy), but tense control is weak and basic errors are frequent (It have, He buy, The candle make); complex sentences are rare. Pronunciation: a Band 5 speaker is usually understood, but mispronunciation can cause strain. The quickest gains: use past tenses and join ideas into longer sentences with because, when, so.2 মিনিটের তুলনায় অনেক ছোট, খণ্ডিত ও বিচ্ছিন্ন বাক্য; পরিচিত বিষয়ে শব্দ চলে, কিন্তু সীমিত ও পুনরাবৃত্ত; কিছু সরল বাক্য সঠিক, কিন্তু অতীতের ঘটনায় present tense ও ঘন ঘন মৌলিক ভুল, জটিল বাক্য প্রায় নেই; উচ্চারণ বোঝা গেলেও কষ্ট হয়। দ্রুত উন্নতি: past tense এবং because, when, so দিয়ে লম্বা বাক্য।

Theme 1 — Children and play

1What kinds of toys and games are popular with children in your country today?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“In cities, I'd say it's mostly screen-based games on phones and tablets, along with branded toys linked to cartoons. But traditional games haven't disappeared — in villages and on rooftops you still see children playing cricket with a homemade bat, spinning tops, or playing old chasing games. So there's quite a divide, and it often depends on how much space and money a family has. And carrom is still hugely popular everywhere, in cities and villages alike.”

Notice: describes two groups and then explains the reason for the divide (space and money).

2How is children's play different now from when your parents were young?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“The biggest difference is probably freedom. When my parents were young, children would disappear outside for hours and invent their own games with whatever they could find. These days, play tends to be much more supervised and organised — partly because parents worry more about safety, and partly because so much entertainment now comes ready-made on a screen. As a result, I think children today get less practice at simply making things up.”

Notice: a past–present comparison (would disappear… These days…), two causes, and a consequence (As a result…).

3Are expensive toys better for children than simple ones?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Not necessarily — in fact, I'd argue the opposite is often true. Expensive electronic toys usually do one thing very well, so the child just presses buttons and watches. A simple toy, like a set of wooden blocks, can become a house, a car or a bridge, so it pushes children to use their imagination. Of course, some expensive educational toys are excellent, but price alone tells you very little about value.”

Notice: a clear position, a contrast developed with examples, and a fair concession (Of course…).

4Should parents limit the time children spend on screen-based games?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“I think they should, but sensibly rather than strictly. Some games are genuinely good for problem-solving and even teamwork, so banning them completely seems unnecessary. The problem is when they replace sleep, physical activity or time with family. So rather than a fixed rule, I'd suggest parents agree clear limits with their children and explain the reasons, because children are more likely to respect rules they understand. Parents setting a good example with their own phones helps too.”

Notice: a qualified yes (sensibly rather than strictly), a clear problem, and a practical recommendation with a reason.

Theme 2 — Competition

5Is it good for children to compete against each other?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“In moderation, yes. Competition can teach children to set goals, work hard and, just as importantly, cope with losing, which is a skill they'll need for the rest of their lives. But if the pressure is too intense, or adults care more about winning than the children do, it can damage their confidence. So I think the key is balance — mixing competitive activities with ones where children have to cooperate.”

Notice: evaluates benefits and risks, then reaches a balanced conclusion (the key is balance).

6Why do some people become very competitive, even in friendly games?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“Partly it's personality — some people simply get a buzz from winning, whatever the game is. But I think upbringing plays a part too. If someone grew up in a family or school where coming first was praised above everything else, they may find it hard to relax, even in a casual game. And sometimes it's about self-esteem: for a few people, losing feels like a judgement on them as a person.”

Notice: three possible causes, each explained, using natural language (get a buzz from).তিনটি সম্ভাব্য কারণ ব্যাখ্যাসহ, স্বাভাবিক ভাষায় (get a buzz from)।

7Do you think games will play a bigger role in education in the future?

🎙️ Say your answer aloud first.

Model Band 8–9

“I'd expect so. Teachers are already using quizzes with points and leaderboards to make revision more engaging, and as the technology improves, I can imagine whole subjects being taught partly through games — history through simulations, for instance. The risk is that learning becomes entertainment and nothing more, so I think games will work best as one tool among many, not as a replacement for good teaching. And of course, not every school will be able to afford the equipment.”

Notice: a prediction based on a current trend, a specific example, and a limitation (The risk is…).
