Why paraphrasing?
1In IELTS Reading and Listening, the answer is almost never given in the question's own words.
2Instead, the test says the same idea in different words. That is paraphrasing.
3If you only hunt for matching words, you walk straight into the Traps: the question's words are often placed right next to the wrong information.
4Many students who know plenty of English lose marks this way. It is often the hidden reason a score stays stuck.
5In this unit you will see it in action, try a real IELTS-level challenge, and find out exactly where paraphrase is costing you marks.

Here is one Reading question, set out exactly as in the exam. Have a go — then see the answer and why.
The Lamplighters
When gas lighting arrived in British towns in the early nineteenth century, each street lamp still had to be lit by hand. Lamplighters walked set routes at dusk, using long poles to open the gas valve and ignite the flame, and returned at dawn to put it out. The work was poorly paid, but it was rarely short of applicants, because it could be combined with a daytime job. Lamplighters also became informal watchmen: since they knew every street on their round, they were often the first to notice a broken window or a stranger acting suspiciously. By the 1930s, however, automatic timers had made most of them unnecessary.

Train your eye: single lines
Three short examples. The first one we do together.
Example 1 · guided
The question says: “The town's population fell in the 1990s.”
The text says: “During the 1990s, the number of people living in the towndeclined.”
Example 2 · your turn
The question asks: “What is the cost of the course?”
Tap the word in the text that means cost.
Example 3 · your turn
The question says: “Most students walk to school.” Which sentence means the same?
Before the real challenge
This next part is real exam level (about Band 6.5–7).
Most students get only a few right the first time — that is completely normal. This is not a test of how good you are. It shows exactly which paraphrases you are missing, and that is what this course fixes.

Reading · Questions 1–6
Salt Marshes and the Rising Sea
Salt marshes are coastal wetlands that develop on sheltered shores, where fine mud carried in by the tide settles among salt-tolerant grasses and herbs. For much of the twentieth century they were regarded as wasteland, and across north-west Europe large areas were drained and enclosed behind sea walls to create farmland.
That view has since changed considerably. Researchers now recognise that marshes absorb a significant share of the energy of incoming waves. In one experiment in a large wave tank, a strip of marsh vegetation reduced wave height by almost a fifth, even when the plants had been flattened by the water. Because a healthy marsh dissipates energy in this way, the sea wall behind it can be built lower, and therefore more cheaply, than one exposed directly to the open sea.
Marshes are also unusually effective at locking away carbon. Their waterlogged soils contain little oxygen, so plant material decomposes extremely slowly and builds up over centuries. Measured per hectare, some marshes accumulate carbon faster than mature tropical forests, although their total global area is small.
The most debated response to rising sea levels is ‘managed realignment’, in which an old sea wall is deliberately breached so that the tide can flood former farmland and a new marsh can form. Supporters point out that this is cheaper than repeatedly raising existing defences. Critics, however, note that new marshes often take decades to resemble natural ones: their soils have been compacted by years of ploughing, and some characteristic plants are slow to colonise them. Farmers, meanwhile, are understandably reluctant to give up productive land.
Whether realignment succeeds may therefore depend less on engineering than on patience. A marsh, unlike a wall, cannot simply be built to order.

Matching colours show which words in the question mean the same as which words in the passage or recording.

What paraphrasing is
To paraphrase is to say the same idea using different words or a different structure. IELTS rarely uses the same words in the question and the text, because it is testing whether you understand the meaning, not whether you can match words.
Match the meaning, not the words. When the same words appear, be careful — that is often where the Trap is.
